Characterization of nutrient deficiency in Hancornia speciosa Gomes seedlings by omitting micronutrients from the nutrient solution Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Bessa,Layara Alexandre; Silva,Fabiano Guimarães; Moreira,Marialva Alvarenga; Teodoro,João Paulo Ribeiro; Soares,Frederico Antônio Loureiro.
Hancornia speciosa Gomes (Mangaba tree) is a fruit tree belonging to the Apocynaceae family and is native to Brazil. The production of seedlings of this species is limited by a lack of technical and nutritional expertise. To address this deficiency, this study aimed to characterize the visual symptoms of micronutrient deficiency and to assess growth and leaf nutrient accumulation in H. speciosa seedlings supplied with nutrient solutions that lack individual micronutrients. H. speciosa plants were grown in nutrient solution in a greenhouse according to a randomized block design, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of a group receiving complete nutrient solution and groups treated with a nutrient solution lacking one of the following...

Ciguatera poisoning in French Polynesia: insights into the novel trends of an ancient disease ArchiMer
Chinain, M.; Gatti, C.m.; Roué, M.; Darius, H.t..
Ciguatera is a non-bacterial seafood poisoning highly prevalent in French Polynesia where it constitutes a major health issue and a major threat to food sustainability and food security for local populations. Ciguatera results from the bioaccumulation in marine food webs of toxins known as ciguatoxins, originating from benthic dinoflagellates in the genera Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa. Ciguatera is characterized by a complex array of gastrointestinal, neurological and cardiovascular symptoms. The effective management of patients is significantly hampered by the occurrence of atypical forms and/or chronic sequelae in some patients, and the lack of both a confirmatory diagnosis test and a specific antidote. In addition, recent findings have outlined the...

Citrus sudden death-associated virus (CSDaV) and citrus tristeza virus (CTV) in eleven rootstocks for ‘Valência’ sweet orange Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Fadel,André Luiz; Mourão Filho,Francisco de Assis Alves; Stuchi,Eduardo Sanches; Wulff,Nelson Arno; Couto,Hilton Thadeu Zarate.
Abstract Citrus sudden death (CSD) is a highly destructive disease and has caused the eradication of millions of trees in southern Brazil within the last 15 years. In spite of the exact cause of CSD has not been determined, evidences have shown that this disease can be transmitted by biotic vectors. Disease incidence in sweet orange scions is related to the rootstock, and the combination with ‘Rangpur’ lime is the most affected. On the other hand, there are evidences of a relation between CSD affected trees and the presence of the Citrus sudden death associated virus (CSDaV) and/or Citrus tristeza virus (CTV). Based on such information, this study has been carried out to determine the presence of CSDaV and CTV, and the association between each other in...

Daher,Elizabeth F.; Evangelista,Leandro F.; Silva Júnior,Geraldo B.; Lima,Rafael S.A.; Aragão,Eveline B.; Arruda,Germana A.J.C.; Galeano,Noemi M.F.; Mota,Rosa M.S.; Oliveira,Rodrigo A.; Silva,Sônia L..
Visceral leishmaniasis is an endemic disease caused by various species of Leishmania. We made a retrospective study of 57 consecutive patients with visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. Patients with visceral leishmaniasis were identified using the registries of the São José Infectious Diseases Hospital. The sample was divided into two groups: patients with serum creatinine (Scr) <1.3mg/dL and Scr > 1.3mg/dL. We compared these two groups for differences in clinical manifestations and laboratory features. Patients' mean age was 28 ± 18 years old; 74% were male. The main clinical symptoms and signs presented in the initial evaluation were: fever (97%), splenomegaly (96.4%), weight loss (95.5%), pallor (93.6%), cough (89.7%), hepatomegaly (87.2%), asthenia...

Correlation between Plasmodium vivax variants in Belém, Pará State, Brazil and symptoms and clearance of parasitaemia BJID
Machado,Ricardo Luiz Dantas; Figueiredo Filho,Alberto Ferreira de; Calvosa,Vanja Sueli Pachiano; Figueredo,Maria Cristina; Nascimento,José Maria; Póvoa,Marinete Marins.
The aim of this study was to determine how different types of P. vivax affect clinical symptoms and parasitaemia clearance. Blood was collected from individuals from Pará State, Brazil. The patients were treated as chloroquine plus primaquine. P. vivax were typed daily till D7 and again on D30. Now we can confirm a previously reported correlation between P. vivax genotype and response to chloroquine. Clinical symptoms do not allow for objective identification of different P. vivax types in the Brazilian Amazon, since the VK247 and P. vivax-like have only been detected in mixed infections.

Main viruses in sweet cherry plantations of Central-Western Spain Scientia Agricola
Sánchez,Rodrigo Pérez; Corts,Remedios Morales; Benavides,Pablo García; Sánchez,María Ángeles Gómez.
Sweet cherry trees (Prunus avium L.) are susceptible to a range of diseases, but there have been no studies to date about the viral infection of sweet cherry trees in Spain. To determine the phytosanitary status of Spanish sweet cherry plantations, the incidence and leaf symptoms induced by Prune dwarf (PDV), Prunus necrotic ringspot (PNRSV) and Apple chlorotic leaf spot (ACLSV) viruses were investigated during 2009. Young leaf samples were taken from 350 sweet cherry trees, corresponding to 17 cultivars, and were analysed by double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA). To associate the leaf symptoms with the virus, 50 mature leaves from each infected tree were visually inspected during the summer. The ELISA results revealed that...

Neural network-based species identification in venom-interacted cases in India J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Maheshwari,R.; Kumar,V.; Verma,H. K..
India is home to a number of venomous species. Every year in harvesting season, a large number of productive citizens are envenomed by such species. For efficient medical management of the victims, identification of the aggressor species as well as assessment of the envenomation degree is necessary. Species identification is generally based on the visual description by the victim or a witness and is therefore quite likely to be erroneous. Symptomatic identification remains the only available method. In a previous published work, the authors proposed a classification table for snake species based on manifested symptoms applicable in Indian subcontinent. The classification table serves the purpose to a great deal but as a manual method it demands human...

Stings from Euscorpius flavicaudis (De Geer, 1778) (Scorpiones, Euscorpiidae) during pregnancy: a clinical case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Dutto,M; Dutto,L; Bertero,M; Goyffon,M.
We report a case in which a 21-week pregnant woman was stung by a Euscorpius flavicaudis (De Geer, 1778) scorpion. Symptoms and signs experienced by the patient were the same as those documented in the literature and with no ill-effects for the pregnancy. Envenoming was local and of low degree of intensity. It is important to emphasize that the patient was stung in her home, which differs from stings in most other parts of the world, in which scorpionism is mostly a risk in outdoor areas.

Strontium ranelate as a possible disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug: a systematic review BJMBR
Rodrigues,T.A.; Freire,A.O.; Bonfim,B.F.; Cartágenes,M.S.S.; Garcia,J.B.S..
Considering that osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent joint disease worldwide, multiple pharmacological treatments have been proposed to alter the articular structure with potential benefit in the progression of the disease. The so-called disease-modifying OA drugs have been frequently investigated but conclusive findings are rare. Strontium ranelate (SrRan) is a drug usually prescribed to treat osteoporosis, with proven effects in decreasing the risk of fractures and possible effect in reducing the progression of OA. The objective of this review was to demonstrate the current panorama of knowledge on the use of SrRan in clinical and experimental models, clarifying its mechanisms of action and describing possible anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory...
